Safina Adds Doubles Title to Family Slams
By Aimee Berg
Sunday, September 9, 2007

Dinara Safina won her first Grand Slam title at the 2007 US Open – seven years after her older brother, Marat Safin, won his first Slam at Flushing Meadows.

On Sunday, Safina and Nathalie Dechy defeated Yung-Jan Chan and Chai-Jung Chuang of Chinese Taipei for the women’s doubles title, 6-4, 6-2.

Afterwards, Safina said, “It’s kind of a family tradition,” to start winning slams in New York, adding, “I hope to win singles here, too,” as Marat did in 2000. (Safina lost to the eventual champion, Justine Henin, in the fourth round this year.)

Dechy had also won the 2006 US Open women's doubles title (with Vera Zvonareva) and only decided to play with Safina two days before the tournament began. At the time, Safina’s partner was injured, and another player suggested that Safina text Dechy. Their future as partners remains unclear.

“We haven't talked about it yet, so I don't know,” Dechy said. “We have time. The way we played, it means we can do some great things also in the future.”

Chan and Chuang, the No. 5 seed, have been playing together since 2005, and were finalists in the 2007 Australian Open. In Australia, they realized, “It’s not luck for us to be in the final. We’re good players, too,” Chan said.

In Sunday's final, however, “we missed too many chances," Chan said.

It was 4-4 in the first set when Chaung put a break point into the net on Safina's serve. Safina and Dechy held to take a 5-4 lead. The next game went to deuce, but Chan was broken, and Dechy and Safina claimed the first set 6-4.

The first set was I think the key of the match," Dechy said. "We hang in there. Then I think they maybe lost a little bit their momentum."

In the second set, Chan was broken in the second game, Chaung was broken in the fourth game, and soon Safina and Dechy were up 5-0. It took three more games before Safin and Dechy could close out the set and match at 6-2.
