Boys' and Girls' Doubles Champions Crowned

Saturday, September 8, 2007
By Aimee Berg

Experience prevailed in the US Open boys' doubles final as longtime friends and tennis rivals, Jonathan Eysseric and Jermone Inzerillo, 17-year-olds from the French Riviera, teamed up to defeat Grigor Dimitrov and Vasek Pospisil, 6-2, 6-4, in one hour and four minutes.

Eysseric had been a runner up in boys' singles at the 2007 Australian Open and a runner-up in boys' doubles at the 2007 French Open (with a different partner).

But it was the first Grand Slam final for the Bulgarian runner-up Dimitrov, and the first Slam ever for his Canadian-born partener, Pospisil (who is based in the Czech Republic). Based on Saturday's performance, Pospisil said, "It's definitely not the last time we'll play together, for sure."

In the next match, Urszula Radwanska won her third Grand Slam girls' doubles title of 2007 with her French Open partner, Ksenia Milevskaya -- just 2 hours and 20 minutes after facing each other in the semifinals (Radwanska won). It took the duo from Poland and Belarus just 57 minutes to defeat Oksana Kalashnikova and Ksenia Lykina, 6-1, 6-2.

Former New York City mayor and USTA board member David Dinkins presented the girls with Tiffany crystal trophies and while announcing the finalists by name, he completely mangled the Eastern European pronunciations. He may have been right, however, about his final prediction: "Not very long, you'll be on center court on Ashe Stadium. I guarantee it."
